Local Member for Epping, Damien Tudehope, visited Macquarie Community College in November to see us in action. He had the chance to meet and speak with a wide range of local students enrolled in English classes and career training courses. He was able to see firsthand the important contribution MCC was making to education in our community.

Congratulations to all the recipients of our Staff Excellence Awards and Tenure Awards for 2017. We thank you for your diligence and dedication to the college and its students. We look forward to see what 2018 holds for all of us!

Macquarie continues to deliver one of the most respected English Language programs offered in Sydney, particularly focusing on combining English language with job training, career specific skills and computer training. English classes will continue to run out of its Carlingford, Ryde, Chatswood, Hawkesbury and Mount Druitt centers after we farewelled our colleagues at the Adult Migrant English Program in Blacktown last Friday. Among hundreds of submissions from other writing students at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Katherine Pinczuk’s short story was selected to be part of an anthology called Strange Objects Covered With Fur. The 2015 publication featured UTS’s most talented new writers.

“When we came to Australia, we had no friends, we couldn’t have any communication with society because we didn’t know English, and so this college took us from our cave and brought us out into society.”

Kudawashe Chakanyuka started her Certificate III in Individual Support six months after fleeing Zimbabwe. Her life had been in imminent danger after she dared to host a meeting for the Movement for Democratic Change, an opposition party to authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe.

Among the guest speakers at Bowman Hall on International Women’s Day last week was our very own Aleksandra Malbasa. She told a crowded room about coming to Macquarie Community College as a refugee for English language classes.
