Outstanding Results Flow from Holistic Child Care Training Program

It is well understood that education is the most important factor influencing outcomes for migrants, particularly women. The barriers to entering and staying in a vocational training course long enough to succeed are significant.

The biggest obstacles include low readiness for work skills and inadequate levels of reading, writing, and spoken English. In addition, there is the difficulty of fitting study around ongoing family responsibilities.

This is where Macquarie Community College’s SKILLS4You program supports learners by bridging the gaps. Many years of experience helping women in Western Sydney prepare for and find fulfilling careers has enabled a holistic program based on the assessment of each individuals current learning and employment readiness.

Outstanding Student Results

Lead Trainer of Early Childhood Education and Care, Sue Bryant, knows that many of her students at Macquarie Community College, who often come from migrant backgrounds, doubt whether they will be able to finish the course. She reminds them that she has worked with many migrant and refugee women in her 30 years’ experience. For the past 12 years, she has trained child care workers.

Despite their initial hesitation the student results are outstanding. “Nine out of ten students from the most recent graduating class were offered employment, with over 50 percent establishing themselves in full or part time work before they’d even finished the course”,notes Sue.

Students benefit from additional one-on-one help from trainers, and workshops set them up with resumés and interview skills, which ultimately improves their chances of gaining employment.
