A message from the CEO about International Women's Day
Celebrating International Women’s Day – 8 March 2019
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is 'Balance for Better' - something we are always working towards at Macquarie Community College. As CEO of the College I am very happy to take a moment today to reflect on how participation in education and training empowers women, enabling them to create better futures for themselves, their families and their communities.
The majority of our motivated learners at Macquarie Community College are women, many of whom are mature aged students balancing their busy lives of study, work, volunteering and family commitments. That is why today I celebrate that we are here to support the learning journey of the thousands of women enrolled each year in our courses.
Commitment to Inclusive Learning Experiences
For decades we have actively demonstrated our commitment to our clients and our communities through the creation and provision of inclusive, supportive and quality learning experiences. Since 1950 tens of thousands of women of all ages, cultural backgrounds and abilities across greater Sydney have been able to participate and benefit from Community College programs and from the relationships, friendships and opportunities this opens for them.
Commitment is one of our 5 values at Macquarie Community College (along with respect, integrity, diversity and collaboration). Commitment means we dedicate our actions and resources to our greater purpose of creating and providing learning that creates better futures and stronger communities.
Never Stop Learning
Our commitment is especially appreciated by our clients aged over 50. Some are at the start of their vocational education and training pathway and some have never missed a year of learning something new and different. They may enrol to improve their English, to start on a new career by completing a qualification in aged care or to take part in a French, upholstery or yoga class to keep their minds sharp, their hands busy or their bodies agile.
Last week for Seniors Week we welcomed more than 150 participants to 'Never Stop Learning' by providing free taster classes in and around our Carlingford campus. It was wonderful to see so many local community members enjoying courses such as Flower Arrangement, Chair Yoga, Writing Your Memoirs, Setting Goals in Retirement, Dancing, Cyber Safety etc.
Afternoon tea each day gave the attendees an opportunity to mingle and get to know each other and try some delicious food from diverse cultures such as Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Aussie. One Senior told us that she was thankful for the event as it meant she had something to do that week. A great reminder for us how important community events are to encourage social inclusion of isolated people.
It is not just what they learn that helps empower the women of Macquarie Community College, but the friendships they make, the role models they meet along the way and the increased confidence and self-esteem they gain from acquiring new skills and knowledge and a senses of achievement.
Enjoy International Women’s Day and take a moment to celebrate the fabulous women in your life that have made a difference, that have empowered you and helped you reach your potential – and while you are at it, pick up the phone or send them an email to say 'Thank you'!
