Macquarie Community College had the honour of hosting a visit from Michelle Rowland MP, Member for Greenway (Labor) at the newly opened Blacktown campus recently.

Michelle was elected to Parliament in 2010 and has served the Blacktown community in a variety of roles including Blacktown Council. Michelle has maintained a strong interest in the College over the years – especially given our community and student-centred approach to creating and providing inclusive, affordable training in a welcoming and respectful, supportive environment

As the Shadow Minister for Communications, she is deeply interested in the work the College is doing across Western Sydney in the delivery of digital literacy training, particularly for jobseekers and students from non-english speaking backgrounds.

Michelle chatted with our trainers and students in a range of courses about their studies – English, Business and Aged Care. The topic of the day in Business Administration Certificate III was sustainability.

The students undertaking the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability Specialisation) (pictured above) were using the newly equipped Blacktown Practical Room to do hands on workshops. Their topics of the day included a simulation of the correct use of PPE and assisting aged care residents (with students acting as clients) with feeding.

This class usually completes the majority of their classes online via Zoom, which enables them to participate from a diverse range of Sydney suburbs. The students love the flexibility and convenience of being able to connect via remote learning – with the all important workshops enabling them to practice their skills and meet each other in person.

Health & Community Services courses are now enrolling – visit the website for more details.
