A message from the CEO – Making Sydney a learning city

At Macquarie Community College we believe that participation in life-long learning is transformational.

It’s not just us working at a local level for our communities of learners across Sydney. This is a global policy framework that we are proud to bring to life everyday. Our work is part of the efforts of millions of other change agents – teachers and educators, community development organisations, policy makers, government and philanthropists, committed to quality life-long learning for all.

Committed to helping Sydney become a learning city

Did you know that UNESCO plays a key global role in highlighting the fundamental role of equitable access to education? Their recent work on Learning Cities resonates with Macquarie Community College's PURPOSE of creating and providing affordable and inclusive learning opportunities.

According to UNESCO:

“A learning city promotes lifelong learning for all. UNESCO defines a learning city as a city that:

  • effectively mobilizes its resources in every sector to promote inclusive learning from basic to higher education;
  • revitalizes learning in families and communities;
  • facilitates learning for and in the workplace;
  • extends the use of modern learning technologies;
  • enhances quality and excellence in learning; and
  • fosters a culture of learning throughout life.

In becoming a learning city, the city enhances individual empowerment and social inclusion, economic development and cultural prosperity, and sustainable development.”

Playing our part in Adult education

As a proud member of the Adult Community Education sector, a provider of Smart and Skilled funded Vocational Education and Training courses and an active member of Community Colleges Australia, Macquarie Community College strives to play our part in making Sydney a learning city.

Given our long term presence in Western and Northwestern Sydney (with campus centres in Mount Druitt, Carlingford, Ryde, Chatswood, Richmond), MCC are particularly focussed on enabling our students to access learning opportunities locally that build skills, confidence, pathways to employment and community connections. We want to play our part because lifelong learning lays the foundation for sustainable social, economic and environmental development.

Again to quote UNESCO, "there is no more powerful transformative force than education – to promote human rights and dignity, to eradicate poverty and deepen sustainability, to build a better future for all, founded on equal rights and social justice, respect for cultural diversity, and international solidarity and shared responsibility, all of which are fundamental aspects of our common humanity."
