Coralie's Aged Care Story

Coralie’s Aged Care Story

Coralie made a life-changing decision to change directions in her personal and work after some life-changing events.

After a long and successful career in various senior office administration and secretarial roles Coralie says she is starting life over again by doing something very different, gaining formal qualifications and a new career in aged care.

Having spent some time recently caring for her aging father Coralie recognised her interest and skills in caring for older people and decided to make her way into the aged care industry. It was also a positive personal breakthrough, and a relief, to find new meaning and purpose after the hard yards and disappointments of trying to get back into work, attending many job interviews but not having too much opportunity as a mature aged “over-qualified” applicant on Newstart.

Even though it has been more than 30 years since she last sat in a formal classroom at secretarial college Coralie found that the learning and study part came back to her pretty quickly. Her admin and office skills also helped her be organised and get her assignments done on time and thoroughly.

She really enjoyed the fact that her fellow students were all mature aged adults– all with busy lives and families and highly motivated to learn new skills and move into meaningful jobs. She also enjoyed her multicultural classmates from Korea, Hong Kong and Africa that she has now made friends with – and helped some of them improve their English skills with practice through lunchtime conversations. She is a bit inspired now herself to brush up on her own language skills – and might head back to Italian lessons –which is how she came to Macquarie Community College in the first-place years ago.

Having had a great work placement at a nursing home in Quakers Hill organised by the College Coralie is now planning to work full time once her certificate is completed and a copy attached to her newly updated resume.
